Workers Rights
Workers’ rights have been hard to obtain, but after more than a century of battling, most of us enjoy considerable protections and rights under the law. These rights fall into many categories, but some of the most important include your right to a safe workplace, and your right to workers’ compensation for injuries in the workplace. Here are some rights you need to be aware of before, and after any workplace accident.
You have the right to a safe workplace: The Occupational Safety and Health Act became the law of the land in 1970, affirming the legal right of every worker to a safe workplace.
You have the right to report dangerous conditions: If you notice violations of safety codes that put you or other employees at risk, you can report these violations to OSHA, who can investigate them and ask your employer to remedy the violations.
You have the right to workers’ compensation: If you are injured in a workplace accident, you have the right to compensation for resulting medical bills and lost wages. It doesn’t matter if the accident was partly or wholly your fault.
You have the right to protection for workplace safety claims:Whether you are reporting violations to OSHA or filing a workers’ compensation claim, you are protected from retaliation by your employer. If you do suffer retaliation of any kind, you can get compensation from your employer for this violation of your rights.
