Injection, IV, Blood Draw, & Blood Donation Injury Attorney in Oklahoma City, Self and Associates

October, 2025: Oklahoma Patients May Suffer Serious Nerve Damage and Other Injuries From Donating Blood and Plasma, Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections, and Routine Medical IVs, Injections and Blood Draws.

Donating blood, or receiving a routine prescribed injection, IV, or blood draw here in Oklahoma from a trained medical professional should NOT be a dangerous procedure in 2025.

However, in more and more cases, we are finding that the Oklahoma doctors, nurses, or medical technicians who perform these procedures are making some serious medical mistakes that can cause permanent nerve damage, tissue damage, and other serious injuries to innocent Oklahoma patients.

Oklahoma patients are rarely (if ever) warned that donating blood, or taking a prescribed medical blood draw, IV, or injection could have a serious associated risk.

There is a strict Oklahoma Statute of Limitations relating to any medical injury that limits the amount of time you have to file a legal claim.

For over 40 years, our Oklahoma Personal Injury Law Firm has successfully represented and recovered millions of dollars for our personal injury clients.

If you, your child, or anyone in your family has been injured during or after any injection, IV, blood draw or blood donation, we can help -- please contact Oklahoma Personal Injury Attorney James Self, at Self & Associates for a free consultation, or call us right now at the toll-free phone number below.

Injection, IV, Blood & Plasma Donation, and Blood Draw Injuries: What Every Oklahoman Should Know

Injections, intravenous (IV) therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, blood donations and blood draws are some of the most routine medical procedures performed every day here in Oklahoma. However, when these procedures are done incorrectly. whether in a hospital, clinic, blood donation center, or one of the many new IV “salons” — they can cause severe and sometimes permanent injuries.

At Self & Associates, we have been protecting the rights of injured Oklahomans for over 40 years. If you or a loved one has suffered harm from an injection, IV infusion, or blood draw, we are here to help.

Blood Draw & Blood Donation Injuries and Complications

Blood draws are commonly performed for routine lab tests or in blood and plasma donation centers here in Oklahoma. Although usually safe, they can cause serious injuries if performed without proper technique and sterile practices.

Nerve Injury

When a phlebotomist or technician inserts a needle incorrectly, it can damage nearby nerves—particularly the median nerve or radial nerve in the arm. This can cause immediate sharp pain, electric shock sensations, tingling, numbness, or lasting weakness in the hand and fingers.

Hematomas and Excessive Bruising

If the needle punctures through the vein or is removed improperly, blood can leak into surrounding tissue, creating a hematoma. Large hematomas can cause significant swelling, severe pain, and pressure on nerves, sometimes leading to compartment syndrome, a surgical emergency.

Arterial Puncture

Instead of a vein, the needle may mistakenly puncture an artery, leading to rapid bleeding, throbbing pain, and the formation of a large, firm mass under the skin. In some cases, urgent intervention is required to prevent further vascular injury.

Infection and Phlebitis

If proper hygiene protocols are not followed, a blood draw site can become infected. Symptoms include redness, warmth, swelling, and pus drainage. An infection can spread into the vein (phlebitis) or bloodstream, posing a risk of sepsis.

Fainting and Vasovagal Reactions

Some people experience a vasovagal reaction, leading to sudden dizziness, sweating, and fainting during or after a blood draw. While often harmless, fainting can cause falls and secondary injuries.

Injuries from Improperly Administered Injections, Including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Even in traditional medical settings, injections must be performed carefully by trained professionals using correct technique. Errors can have lifelong consequences, as many Oklahomans who have endured the resulting injuries know.

Sciatic Nerve Damage

Intramuscular (IM) injections in the hip or buttock can injure the ciatic nerve if placed too low or too far inside. This can lead to excruciating pain radiating down the leg, numbness, weakness, or even permanent paralysis.

Shoulder Nerve Injuries and SIRVA

Injections into the upper arm can damage the axillary nerve or radial nerve, resulting in loss of sensation or movement. Some patients develop SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration), causing severe shoulder pain and restricted motion.

Intra-Arterial Injections

If a needle mistakenly enters an artery, vasospasm and loss of circulation can lead to gangrene and possible amputation.

Compartment Syndrome and Tissue Damage

Improper technique can trigger compartment syndrome, where internal bleeding increases pressure inside the muscle, damaging nerves and tissue. Certain drugs can also cause tissue necrosis if injected incorrectly.

Injection Site Infections

Even routine injections can lead to dangerous infections if sterile procedures are not strictly followed.

IV Therapy Injuries in Medical Facilities & Under-regulated Settings

Most IVs are ordered by doctors and performed in Oklahoma medical settings. However, as in all areas of medical care and treatment, while most procedures are performed safely, serious mistakes do happen -- and serious injuries can result.

Air Embolism and Vascular Damage

Improper needle placement can damage veins, causing internal bleeding or hematomas. Even more dangerously, an air embolism can occur if air enters the IV line, blocking blood flow to vital organs and potentially leading to death.

IV Infiltration Injury, Extravasation, and Tissue Necrosis

Certain vitamin infusions and medications can destroy tissue if they leak outside the vein. Extravasation & IV Infiltration injuries may result in severe blistering, scarring, or necrosis, sometimes requiring surgical treatment.

Allergic Reactions and Overdoses

When when medical facilities and other IV therapy providers do not adequately screen patients for allergies or health conditions, the risk of severe allergic reactions or toxic overdose increases dramatically.

Infections and Sepsis

Infection is one of the most serious dangers of IV therapy. If staff fail to disinfect the skin or use contaminated equipment, bacteria can enter the bloodstream. This can lead to cellulitis (deep skin infection), abscesses, or sepsis, a life-threatening emergency requiring hospitalization.

The Rise of IV Salons and Hydration Bars

Across Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and communities throughout the state, IV therapy centers and “hydration bars” have become increasingly popular. These businesses often market themselves as wellness providers offering quick infusions of vitamins, fluids, and medications—sometimes without a physician’s prescription or supervision.

While these treatments may seem safe, they can carry the same significant risks as procedures performed in medical facilities, if not performed properly.

Know Your Rights Under Oklahoma Law if You Have Been Injured

If you have been injured by a blood draw, blood donation, injection, or IV procedure, you deserve answers, and you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and any lasting disability. Whether the harm occurred in a medical facility, blood donation center, or an unlicensed IV business, you have important legal rights.

At Self & Associates, we have been standing up for injured Oklahomans for over 40 years. With offices in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and cities throughout Oklahoma, we are ready to help you protect your rights and hold negligent providers accountable.
