The spinal cord is about 18 inches long and is the major bundle of nerves that extend from the base of the brain, down the middle of the back, to about the waist. These nerves carry impulses to and from the brain through other nerves throughout the rest of the body. The brain and the spinal cord make up what is known as the central nervous system.
The spinal cord is contained within rings of bone called vertebra. There are seven cervical (neck) vertebra, twelve thoracic (chest) vertebra, five lumbar (back), and five sacral (tail bone) vertebra. These bones make up the spinal column. In general the higher in the spinal column an injury occurs, the more paralysis the victim will suffer.
Cervical injuries usually result in quadriplegia while injuries to the thoracic level and below can result in paraplegia. Additionally spinal cord injury victims also can experience bladder and bowel complication, inability to regulate blood pressure, reduced control of body temperature, and chronic pain.
There are approximately 450,000 people in the united States that live with a spinal cord injury and about 10,000 new cases of spinal cord injury occur each year. The majority of victims are males between the ages of 16 to 30.
Spinal cord injuries can arise as the result of any kind of accident. Incidents involving car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, distracted drivers, aviation accidents, train accidents, boat accidents, on the job accidents, medical malpractice, birth injuries, surgical errors, misdiagnosis, nursing home abuse, defective products, trip/slip and falls can all lead to permanent paralysis and even Death.
The areas of recovery against the wrongdoer in a spinal cord injury can include:
- Medical costs
- Pain and suffering
- Permanent Disability
- Physical Therapy
|
- Lost income
- Emotional distress
- Home health care
- Vocational retraining
|
